Ecological Awareness
Because we have only one Earth.

Isn't it symptomatic of western civilization these days how everybody is talking a whole lot about the pollution of the oceans and global warming and the need for cutting back on greenhouse gasses, but noone seriously seem to be willing to make the nescessary cutbacks when it comes to it? Who would seriously be willing to abandon their car for the cause? It's one of those things that makes such a suitable topic for a diner conversation, but deep down, when it comes to it, you're only too well aware that you're gonna look like a freakin' idiot wearing one of those bycickle helmets. And you'd have to get up much earlier in the morning if you were to rely on public transportation. And a little million other things. - And the same applies on the governmental level: Everyone are busy organizing summits aiming at decisions of when to hold the next summit. While the fact on the bottom line is that the economic and practical obstacles of actually cutting back on fossil fuels are just too unsurmounteable to bear. So we decide to decide on when to hold the next big summit.

This is not to say that donating money to organizations like Greenpeace or the WWF or Nepenthes, or similar initiatives of natural preservation, is futile. By all means support such initiatives. I am just pointing towards the much more central issue of awareness: Leaving your car in the garage one day a year to show your support of the case is of course all fine. But it don't solve anything. And does it really reflect a genuine care for the environment, or is it deep down more a matter of demonstrating how nice people we are? Perhaps one of the issues we need to work on here is selfishnes: Why should we care about the future of the planet? Why should we act to benefit the next generation? But if we destroy the sky and the oceans and the rainforests then Who will suffer the consequences if not our own children?

We have only one Earth to pass on to the next generation. So why not care for it? Just a little bit. Or a whole lot, if we can muster the strength and the will.
